What Version of the Bible do you read and why??

I read the ESV (English Standard Version) of the Bible.

The ESV has been carefully weighed against the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, to ensure the fullest accuracy and clarity and to avoid under-translating or overlooking any nuance of the original text.  But throughout, the goal has been to retain the depth of meaning and enduring language that have made their indelible mark on the English-speaking world and have defined the life and doctrine of the church over the last four centuries.

I enjoy reading this version because it is in a context that I can understand.  I know the King James Version is what most people have read, but I think many readers are turning to the ESV because of the fact that is a down to earth type bible reading.

This is the ESV version of Psalm 23
 1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
 2He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
 3He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
   for his name’s sake.

 4Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
   I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
   your rod and your staff,
   they comfort me.

 5You prepare a table before me
   in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
   my cup overflows.
6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
   all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD

I'd love to know what version you read and why ~~~

  6. I know this is bad..but I can't stand the KJV! It's so difficult to understand, I like the ESV myself but use the NIV. I am minoring in Biblical Theology so it's important for me to read words I actually understand, lol. Following you back now! (English bulldog owner too)

  7. Hi,

    I read the King James Version when I am at church because that's what our Pastor teaches from. At home I read amplified, New King James Version, and many others because some are more understandable.

    Thank your for following my blog, I am following you now.

    Have a great day!

  8. I like the NKJV - but this ESV sounds like a great one, too. Very similar, I think. Thanks for sharing!

  9. I read the NIV version b/c that's what my women's devotional Bible is, but it's actually the version that I prefer, b/c it's easier to understand. I think I do have an ESV Bible also though. Thanks for stopping by Heartfelt Balance Handmade Life today!! Have a wonderful Monday!
